Basil leaves erect perennial herbs, fragrant whole plant. Stems four-sided, distally much branched, purplish green, pilose. Leaves opposite, leaf blade ovate, apex acute, margin serrate or entire, glandular spot below leaf. Thyme terminal, each round with about 6 flowers, rachis long and pilose, corolla light red. Nuts ovate, dark brown. Flowering July ~ September.

The whole plant contains volatile oil. The main components of volatile oil are Ocimene, 1, 8-cineole (1, Eucalyptus 8-cineole, Eucalyptus Linalool, Eugenol, Anethole and Methyl cinnaminate. It has the functions of dampness, digestion, blood circulation, detoxification and qi.
